Gold Road Ghost Town |
||||
Unbelievably, tucked in among the gulches of the steep hillside are the remains of the town of Gold Road. At first the ruins of the old town are hard to spot. The old walls and foundations were built of native stone, and as such blend in with the surrounding rocky country. The ruins only become really apparent upon close scrutiny of the gulches.The town was founded in 1903 when gold was discovered in the area. The mines petered out and Gold Road died just after WW II. Today Gold Road offers gold mine tours for a nominal fee. On the tour you can actually cross under Route 66 a mere 275 feet above! |
